LEDVANCE Joins Works with Home Assistant via Matter

LEDVANCE, the company born from OSRAM's general lighting business, has joined the Works with Home Assistant program with no fewer than 116 certified devices. They all use Matter over Wi-Fi, so they integrate directly with your Home Assistant, run locally and don't depend on any cloud.

A century of lighting experience

LEDVANCE was created in 2016, when OSRAM, one of the oldest and most respected names in lighting, spun off its general lighting business as an independent company. The name combines "LED" and "advance", a nod to the shift toward modern LED lighting.

Today it has offices in more than 50 countries, customers in more than 140 and over 100 years of lighting experience. It still sells products under the OSRAM brand through a licensing agreement. Its OSRAM SMART+ range brings all that expertise into the smart home, and now into the Home Assistant program.

Matter over Wi-Fi: no extra gear

Every certified LEDVANCE device uses Matter with a Wi-Fi connection. Matter is an open standard developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance that lets devices from different brands work together locally, so you're not locked into one company's ecosystem and your data stays in your home.

Since they use Wi-Fi, you don't need a hub or any additional equipment: just add them to your network and they talk directly to Home Assistant. A solid Wi-Fi network is key for everything to respond properly.

LEDVANCE put it this way: "We believe that openness and interoperability are essential for the future of smart homes", said Pulkit Dhanuka, Product Manager at the company.

Which devices are included

The list is so long that Home Assistant didn't even include it in full in its announcement. It covers:

  • Filament-style bulbs, spotlights, and recessed and track downlights.
  • Ceiling and wall lights, and floor lamps.
  • Flexible LED strips, great under kitchen cabinets or behind the TV.
  • IP-rated options for bathrooms and the garden, including floodlights and outdoor spots.
  • The SMART+ Plug, which turns any ordinary lamp or appliance into something you can automate.
  • Smart wall switches: replace the switch, keep the bulbs you already have.

Most of the range is tunable white or full color, so you can go from a cozy evening glow to crisp morning brightness.

Automations you can build

Once these devices are in Home Assistant, you can create automations with the devices you already own. One example from the source: turning your outdoor security lights on when a sensor detects motion.

You can also set up scenes for every moment of the day, adjusting color temperature and brightness by time, or automate old lamps with the smart plug without changing anything else.

Certification, local control and long-term support

Like everything in the program, LEDVANCE's products were tested by the Home Assistant team to verify they meet the core requirements: local control and privacy. LEDVANCE has also committed to long-term support.

This aligns with the sustainability principle of the Open Home Foundation, the non-profit behind the program: since these lights don't need the cloud to work, a far-off server shutdown won't turn them into e-waste. And because Matter is cross-platform, you can keep using them if you ever switch systems.

What if my device isn't on the list?

A device not listed under Works with Home Assistant doesn't mean it's unsupported. It may not have gone through the team's testing yet, may not fit the program requirements, or may use a connectivity type that isn't currently tested.

The program highlights devices known to work well with Home Assistant and brands that make a long-term support commitment. If you want to add smart lighting to your home with Home Assistant and a properly prepared Wi-Fi network, EgeaINC can help.
